🏛️ History of South Africa

South Africa history spans over 100,000 years — from indigenous peoples, Dutch and British colonization, apartheid, to modern democratic South Africa.

Indigenous Peoples (100,000 BC - 1652)

San (Bushmen) — oldest continuous culture in Africa, hunter-gatherers. Khoekhoe pastoralists. Bantu peoples (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho) migrated south 1000 BC bringing iron and agriculture.

Dutch Cape Colony (1652-1806)

Jan van Riebeeck founded Cape Town 1652 for Dutch East India Company. Boers (farmers) settled. Slaves imported from Africa, India, Indonesia. Khoekhoe decimated by disease and dispossession.

British Cape and Great Trek (1806-1880)

Britain took Cape 1806. Slavery abolished 1834. Boers resented British rule, undertook Great Trek 1835-1840 — 12,000 trekked north, founded Orange Free State and Transvaal.

Diamond, Gold, Boer Wars (1867-1902)

Diamonds discovered Kimberley 1867. Gold discovered Witwatersrand 1886 — gold rush. Anglo-Boer Wars 1880-1881, 1899-1902 — British won, used concentration camps. Union of South Africa 1910.

Apartheid (1948-1994)

National Party won 1948 — implemented apartheid. Race classification, pass laws, forced removals. African National Congress (ANC) resistance. Sharpeville Massacre 1960 — 69 killed. Soweto Uprising 1976. Nelson Mandela imprisoned 1962-1990 (27 years).

Democratic South Africa (1994-today)

First free elections April 27, 1994 — Mandela first black president. Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Mbeki, Zuma, Ramaphosa presidents. 60 million population. 11 official languages. Economic challenges, but largest economy in Africa with Nigeria.
